The Decade of Discovery

Description

Pastor Mike Glenn offers 20-somethings practical ways to discern their identities and determine their futures.

I’ve just finished reading “The Defining Decade” by Dr. Meg Jay, a psychologist at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Jay’s book is an important study of the impact the twenties make on our lives.  Having worked with young adults in Kairos for the last nine years, I couldn’t agree with her more.  While our culture routinely diminishes the importance of our twenties, Dr. Jay’s research reveals how life impacting the events of our twenties actually are.  Thus, Dr. Jay has come to the conclusion that our twenties are too important to waste.

I agree with her.

One of the issues her book addresses is how many important decisions we make by not making a decision at all.  We decide a lot of important things by choosing not to make a decision.  As you can imagine, her counsel to twenty-something’s is to decide.

While I agree with a lot of what she says, I would add one other word of counsel to my twenty-something friends: discover. The twenties are a great time to discover who you were created to be. By this time in your life, you’ve had enough experience to find out what you like and don’t like, and you’ve done some things well and some things not so well.

And from all of this, you’re getting a better plan as to who you really are.  But as Dr. Jay points out in her book, nothing happens by accident. You have to be intentional.

How can you be intentional in discerning who you are?

  1. Take PLACE.  This diagnostic tool will help you understand the hard wiring of your personality and your spiritual gifts.  This is a great place to start.
  2. Listen to your small group.  Who are those believers around you who know you best?
  3. Find a mentor. Who is most like the person you would like to be?  Find him… find her… and start hanging around them.
  4. Pray. This can’t be replaced. After all, who knows you better than Jesus?
