The Bread of Life
I think God deliberately used bread in this passage as opposed to other things we eat—like vegetables or meat—because the Word of God is like bread. Nourishing, comforting, filling. Just as bread can be varied, Scripture can hit me in different ways depending on where I am in my life.
God can test us with trials in our lives to show us that we need Him more, or so that we find we need Him in a different way. We often see trials as ways the devil is torturing us, but Jesus tested His own disciples to determine that they were faithful. It wasn’t just so He could know their faith, but also so that the disciples could grow and mature in their faith.
When in trials, digging into the Bible is often the only way to stay sane. And while in those different stages of your life, the Word of God is like bread—it can be different each time you read it, but it’s always filling. It’s hard to thank God for our trials, but they can show us how to depend on Jesus more, just like we depend on bread to survive.
FAITH STEP: Are you struggling with something right now? Take the time to read more of God’s Word, and find sustenance, comfort and fulfillment there. Eat the bread of heaven and find a new way to cling to Jesus.
