The Armor of God

God has been equipping Christians for thousands of years with the means to fight the power of Satan.

Read: Ephesians 6:10-13

In Ephesians 6:11, we are called to “put on the full armor of God” to help us stand against the devil’s schemes. This armor isn’t something new, and it isn’t some intangible, unreachable idea. God has been equipping Christians with it for thousands of years. By understanding its background and what each piece of the armor means, we can equip ourselves to make better use of what it has to offer.

The first two pieces of armor are the belt of truth and breastplate of righteousness. The truth of God’s Word is the first defense in combating the lies of the enemy.

Righteousness and character are the means to justice and victory. The armor of God also includes having our “feet fitted” with the “gospel of Peace” (Ephesians 6:15). Believing the good news of the gospel and sharing it with others will allow us to stand up to the cunning ways of Satan. Another piece of our armor is the shield of faith. Any unyielding faith in God’s sovereignty and goodness “can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16). The helmet of salvation is a symbol of protection and victory. Our greatest victory is the gift of salvation we have been given through Christ’s sacrifice. The final piece in our suit of armor is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. When we read our Bibles and memorize scripture, we are armed with arrows of truth to combat the enemy.

Every Christian is equipped with the armor of God. We cannot underestimate the war that rages around us, and instead, we must take advantage of each of the tools the Lord has given.

  • Which tools to combat the enemy are you taking advantage of? Which tools could you start taking advantage of?
  • How can using these tools help you grow closer to Jesus?
