Thanks! I Needed That

What can you do today to make sure that mercy triumphs over judgment in your marriage?

Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:13

Sue finished the final page of her research paper. She'd been writing in longhand for a week. She had been afraid that her procrastination had cost her a chance at meeting the deadline, but she had two more days to type, correct, and print out the paper. Sue's husband, Barry, had told her he would show her how to do that as soon as he returned home from his business trip. Sue knew she was going to make it. She would graduate in the spring after all.

Sue started thinking about graduation day. She could just see herself walking across the stage in her cap and gown. But her thoughts were interrupted when the phone rang. It was Barry. He told Sue that his trip had been extended to all of the following week.

As Sue heard her husband's words, her fear of not graduating quickly turned into anger. But even as her anger rose, even as she was tempted to lash out sharply at Barry, the Holy Spirit quieted her emotions, and her anger gave way to mercy. Her feelings of judgment subsided, and she spoke merciful words to her husband.

"I'll miss you," Sue said. "And I was particularly hoping for your help on the computer with my research paper?' After a moment of silence, Barry reassured his wife.

"I'll tell you what," Barry said. "I'll call back tonight after my last meeting and take you through using the computer step-by-step. If we need to, I'll call my office and we'll get it typed for you there:'

Barry's kindness—the fact that he sacrificed his own time for her—touched Sue. She later realized that this could happen only because she was merciful in her response to Barry.
