Thank Him for His Faithfulness

Description

How do we rest in God’s faithfulness yet never take it for granted?

The God who made the world…himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else… God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, "We are his offspring" (Acts 17:24—28, NIV).

One of my favorite hymns is “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” Despite my good intentions, despite the fact that I deeply love Jesus, I am not always faithful to Him. But “his compassions they fail not.” He is faithful.

The Bible talks much more about the faithfulness of God than the faithfulness of people. God never gives up—He’s always present, always seek- ing us out. This amazing truth is ironically the cause of our apathy, Mark Buchanan writes in The Holy Wild. Because “faithfulness is, by definition, the predictable, the habitual, the sturdy, the routine,” it is easy to take it for granted.

So often my prayers are asking Jesus to help me, to rescue me from the consequences of my unfaithfulness. I take His faithfulness for granted. His love is a constant in my life. Which presents a dilemma, Buchanan writes: “God’s faithfulness is one divine characteristic that we rest in so completely that our rest has become apathy. "In him," Paul declares, ‘We live and move and have our being." So, our dilemma: How do we rest in God’s faithfulness, but never take it for granted?” It is because of His faithfulness, not our own effort, that we are able to put our faith in Him.

FAITH STEP: Go online and find an audio version of “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”—there are several good ones in a variety of styles on YouTube.com—and simply sit and listen. Let the words soak in, and let them lead you into a prayer of thankfulness for Jesus and His faithfulness.
