Testing the Waters

A loving, peaceful, patient heart is what the Spirit of God produces. Is the Holy Spirit influencing your heart?

Every once in a while I have to use a small chemical device to test the waters in the pool in our backyard. Just by looking at the water, it is hard to tell if it is in shape for swimming. I need to know what that water is really like. My heart is much more important than a backyard swimming pool. How can I test to see if the Holy Spirit is influencing my heart? By checking the “niceness factor.” It is the Spirit's job to make us nice. How nice you are is an indicator of whether the Spirit is working. Notice what Paul said:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:22-24).

A loving, peaceful, patient heart is what the Spirit of God produces. The ministry of the Spirit to our hearts is subjective and emotional. Nearly anyone can tell the difference between anxiety and peace, between affection and hatred, between joy and sadness. If you can tell the difference, you can tell when the Holy Spirit is ministering or not. He turns people into nice. Many Christians in this world know their Bible very well, but are not known as nice people. Nice comes not from the pages of the Bible, but from the person of the Spirit.
