Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. MATTHEW 26:41
Knowing I love birthday cake, my friend dropped off two pieces from her own gooey birthday cake. But I was on a diet and didn’t eat them — not immediately anyway! Then, after resisting the cake for a full day, I unwrapped the foil and ate both pieces at one sitting.
It actually made me feel sick! And it wasn’t nearly as good as I had thought it would be.
The truth is, temptation intensifies as we tolerate it. The longer I looked at that cake, the more I wanted it. After resisting temptation all day, I almost felt I deserved to be rewarded by eating it! In Genesis 3:6 we’re told that Eve saw the fruit, thought about it, touched it, and then “she took some and ate it.”
What sin is tempting you? What temptation are you toying with? Thinking about? Looking at? Touching? One more glass of wine? A harmless flirtation? Watch out. Avoid living with the regret of having yielded to temptation. This is the time to pray!
