Take Control of Your Faith

We need to make sure we own our faith for ourselves, depending on the Holy Spirit rather than another person.

In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba. Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him.” 2 Kings 12:1–2 (tniv)

Christian mentors are wonderful. They guide us and help us on our way, whether spiritually or emotionally or both. They give of their time and wis- dom, and they do it out of a desire to help, not because they’re compensated. But at some point you need to practice the wisdom you gained and to test the strength of your faith. You need to make your faith your own and not lean on another Christian’s faith. You need to take responsibility for your own beliefs.

King Joash did fine while his mentor Jehoiada was alive, but once Jehoiada died, he started sinning against God. He did a complete 180, which was very sad because he had done such a good job while his mentor guided him. But perhaps his faith was not his own—it was borrowed from Jehoiada, and God wanted Joash to own his faith.

We shouldn’t depend on another Christian so much that if they were gone, we would lose our faith. We need to make sure we own our faith for ourselves, depending on the Holy Spirit rather than another person. Jesus doesn’t want lukewarm followers—He wants people 100 percent committed to Himself.

FAITH STEP: Is your faith your own or do you rely heavily on another Christian to keep you accountable? How can you take control of your own faith? Write down some steps you can take this week.
