Take As Prescribed
Psalm 119:133 (NIV®)
Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.
For many years my dad practiced veterinary medicine. If you took your dog to him, he would not only make a diagnosis and prescribe the medication, he would dispense the medication―one-stop shopping. One of the things that amazed me was the difficulty people had in following instructions. We answered the phones in the clinic, so we heard all the stories. “He said to give the dog one pill, three times a day. But we were going on a three-day vacation and the dog wasn’t going, so before we left we gave him nine pills. Was that a problem?” He would write the directions down, print them on the label, and then tell the owner exactly what to do. Still, people ignored all that and did whatever seemed like a good idea. We’re a little bit like that with God. We think we can deal with Him on our terms and live the way we want to. How could it matter if I do it His way or my way? Actually, it does matter, and He has given us His instruction manual—the Bible. It will be a challenge to follow its instructions, because we are imperfect people. But we should make every effort to follow its commands and principles, because life is much easier when we do.
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the Scriptures—Your Holy Word for us, an absolutely trustworthy guide for how to practice our faith and live our lives. Show me the places where I have my own ideas and follow my own instructions. Give me a hunger and thirst for Your Word. I want Your best for my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
