Description

It wasn’t until her college years that basketball player Maya Moore understood the importance of having other Christians in her life. It was there that she experienced true community.

"Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 (NASB)

Maya Moore had grown up going to church and had learned about right and wrong, but when her mom got laid off from her job, they found themselves having to depend upon the Lord. God provided the stability that their financial situation could not.

While involved in their church, Maya put her trust in the Lord and began to experience a relationship with God.

It wasn’t until her college years at UConn that Maya began to see the importance of having other Christians in her life. She experienced community.

She started attending a Bible study led by a college graduate. As they studied the Bible together, Maya learned how to share her story and her faith with others, which was something that was foreign to her. “I started embracing God’s promptings to continue to grow in sharing my faith.” Through the strength and encouragement of her community, she began looking for opportunities to talk about the life-changing message of Jesus with her friends and teammates.

By her senior year, she was leading a small group Bible study for her team.

Maya was a part of another life-changing community when she attended Athletes in Action’s Ultimate Training Camp. She was able to spend a week with other Christian athletes from around the country. She found comfort in knowing she was not alone. “Seeing other athletes trying to follow the Lord was very encouraging to me.” UTC was so impactful in Maya’s life that she decided to serve as an intern at the UTC the following two summers.

Questions: Do you have a community to strengthen and encourage you? How are you strengthening and encouraging other Christians?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the people You have placed in my life to help me get this far in my journey with You. Thank You for how they have shaped and encouraged me. I pray for more people to continue sharpening and challenging me. Use me to do the same in others’ lives.
