Studying to Serve

Bithi Aktar, 13, graduated from an education program for street children in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

A few years ago, Bithi’s father had an accident with a shoemaking machine that left him disabled, without a right hand.  That left Bithi’s mother to provide for the family.

It also put extra responsibility on Bithi. She worked with her mother as a housekeeper, and she looked after her siblings. Her work left no time for school.

Then she joined World Vision’s street children education program. She still works as a tailor and does block printing, but she goes to school. She’s in 5th grade.

“I want to be a medical doctor,” she says. “I want to serve poor children, so they won’t have the experiences I had.”
