;

Strong Fortress

Description

We need Almighty God as our refuge and fortress because we will be facing spiritual warfare.

Psalm 91:2 (NIV®)

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

When we’re tempted, we need to know where we can go for refuge. It’s worth noting that if the psalmist says we need a refuge and a fortress, there must be an adversary we need a refuge from and a fortress against. In our sophistication and intellectualism, and all the things that come with our 21st-century pride and arrogance, we like to imagine that we’re just a bit too sophisticated to deal with the devil and demons and spiritual conflict. But if we need Almighty God as our refuge and fortress, we should recognize that’s because we will be facing spiritual warfare. The Bible describes a time when God’s Kingdom will fully come to the earth—when Jesus will be acknowledged as Lord and King—but we’re not there yet. So we need to understand that our refuge is not the force of our will or the power of our intellect. God is our refuge and fortress.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we live in a sinful world where dark forces seek to pull us away from You. Until the day when Jesus returns and evil is banished, You are a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Thank You, Lord, for Your unfailing promise of protection. In Jesus’ name, amen.
