For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? God is my strong fortress; he has made my way safe. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, leading me safely along the mountain heights. (2 Samuel 22:32-34, NLT)
When raising children there will be struggles along the way. Through the years, as we've hit our rough spots in our family, these verses have been such an encouragement to me. There have been many times as a mom when I genuinely had no idea how to best help my children through a difficult season.
In those moments, I would pour my heart out to the Lord. I would beg Him to give me wisdom and eyes to see my children the way He sees them. He knows them better than I do. He loves them more than I ever will. He created them to do great things for His name. I know He has a plan to prosper them and not to harm them, but we live in a fallen world and there will be challenges and heartbreaks along the way.
The Lord has been so present and faithful to lead me in those times. As I have quieted myself before Him and faithfully sought His guidance, He has proven Himself to be a solid rock and a strong fortress. There have been countless times when I have come to Him heavy hearted, not knowing how to navigate a particular season. Most often, He has led me one step at a time. As I depended on Him moment by moment, day by day, eventually I was able to look back and realize that He had led me safely along the mountain heights.
When I was young and dreaming of being a mom, I envisioned a life full of playing, laughing, baking cookies and sheer bliss. Sometimes motherhood is exactly that and for those moments I am so thankful! More often, being a mom is the most challenging thing I've ever done. Motherhood is hard work and often far from sheer bliss. In the challenging moments, lean into your heavenly Father. Slow down and remember that He is Lord. Rest in the truth that He is a solid rock and a strong fortress. Moment by moment, day by day, he will lead you safely through any and all circumstances.
