Sticks and Stones
I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake. (1 John 2:12 ESV)
Sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never hurt you.
Words do hurt . . . sometimes very deeply. I know that there are some words that I have ‘worn’ on my heart, mind and back for decades. Little whispering lies and labels that seem to pull me down whenever I try to rise up; rise up out of my comfort zone, out of the back pew . . . out of a miry pit.
What do you mean you want to volunteer for ministry in the church? Have you forgotten that you are ________?
Did you see how they are looking at you? They must know about __________. Don’t even think about trying to befriend them, they would reject you in a heartbeat.
Why do you even try? You’ve been a loser and a failure your whole life. Your (dad, mom, teacher, friend) was right.
So instead of straightening up and getting off our butts in obedience to the Holy Spirit when He calls on us, we instead heed the enemy’s lies and plant ourselves right where we are. Often face down in despair.
But God says that we are forgiven for His name’s sake. His name, which is above all names - Jesus! Why do we not grasp this? Why do we cheapen the power and purpose in His name and wallow in our past mistakes?
Go to the cross. Meet Him there. Confess, repent, and lay down the lies and labels of your past sins, shaking off the old ‘you’. If you’re having trouble seeing yourself as the new creation that you are – a pure, daughter of the King – then go buy yourself a toy tiara. A few mornings trying to balance a crown on your head as you eat your breakfast may be just what you need to bring the truth home to your heart. He is the lifter of your head, so get up, throw back your shoulders and be obedient! You’ll be amazed to see where He takes you.
Father, you are the King of Kings . . . please help us to walk today with confidence seeing ourselves as you do . . . forgiven and pure princesses.
