Despite the many obstacles of poverty and the social barrier of her slum community in Bangladesh, 11-year-old Ferdaushi Ara dreams big dreams. When her parents promised her in marriage to a 22-year-old man, it seemed her dreams were over.
Ferdaushi is a child laborer and is enrolled in World Vision's non-formal education center. Her parents are very poor, and because of this, decided to give their daughter in marriage.
Ferdaushi shared the news with her class friends and other child laborers of the community. Her friends told the facilitator and the education center, who met with local authorities and Ferdaushi’s parents.
They began to understand marriage didn’t offer a better life for her, but education did. Now Ferdaushi is going to school regularly in addition to her work.
"Only education can change my life. I will touch the sky. Thanks World Vision for your support to me. This is not the end, it's my starting steps," says Ferdaushi.
