The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. PSALM 23:1 – 2
Have you ever complained to your doctor, “Something’s wrong. What’s the matter with me?” Perhaps after an examination the doctor concludes, “You just need a rest.”
All of us need to take a break from time to time, but my real concern is that I not become weary in my spirit. I need to make not just physical rest, but spiritual rest, a priority! Henry Drummond, an old-time revivalist, explained that spiritual rest “is not a hallowed feeling that comes over us in church. It’s the repose of a heart set deep in God.”
Psalm 116:7 says, “Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.” Do you need that kind of rest? Rest from burnout? Rest from trying to please God by your own efforts? Rest from worry, fear, or anger?
Be at rest. Lay your burdens at the feet of Jesus. Stop striving, and start trusting the Lord who has been good to you.
