Spirit Stepping

00:00

Description

Since spiritual life comes by the Spirit, we should also take our individual steps in the spiritual life by the Spirit.

Watch! Watch carefully where your foot goes. In a previous devotional, I mentioned that in the New Testament there are different words for walking. In Galatians 5:16 the word walking refers to how we live in this world. But in Galatians 5:25 the word refers to taking an individual step by the Spirit. Paul said that since spiritual life comes by the Spirit, we should also take our individual steps in the spiritual life by the Spirit.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another (Galatians 5:25).

Paul is referring to the concrete situations of life where we have to make individual decisions and perform particular acts. He is not referring to the larger dimensions of our life, but to the day by day decisions of our life. He said that those decisions and actions should be influenced by the Holy Spirit. He gave three examples of what he meant. We should allow the Holy Spirit to keep us from boasting about things we do; we should surrender to the Spirit so that we don't go around challenging people to arguments; and we should permit the Holy Spirit to take away envy so that we are satisfied with what we have. Those are concrete experiences that occurred during our day. We should allow the Holy Spirit to be part of the actions and attitudes of our day.
