“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,” Luke 1:46-47 (ESV)
Oh how I love the Christmas song that puts those words to music. I don’t even know who originally wrote or sang it, but if I close my eyes, I can still recall the amazing soprano who would sing it every Christmas in my home church as a child.
Some people sing a solo and can captivate an audience. Others sing and people are captivated by the presence of the Lord. I prefer the latter. Spirit filled songs stop me in my tracks. When a singer is truly in love with Jesus, oh how it flows from their hearts, out of their mouths and into my soul. Love it. Mary’s poetic song of praise clearly was this kind of sweet, pure, worship.
Then, there’s me.
Oh, I sing and worship the Lord with all my heart and I so love Jesus. As I enter in, often I’m moved with the revelation of all He is and all He’s done for me. But my singing doesn’t affect anyone – except maybe to bring tears to those who are within earshot.
Christmas carols are written not just to drum out the noise of shoppers in packed malls or to boost morale and fun at parties. Many of the lyrics are spiritually impactful when we slow down enough to really listen. As we sing the words with full understanding and engage our hearts and minds, we worship.
We may not all have the gift of a lilting soprano voice, but God hears the heart. Why not join me today as I crank up the stereo in my car and sing out a few verses of some favorite carols! Who cares what the guy in the car next to you is thinking? Let’s choose to rejoice in God our Savior today!
Father, oh how we love to worship You in song . . . especially at Christmas! Help us to engage our hearts and minds as we enter into worship and embrace the true meaning of the season. Thank you for the amazing gift of Your Son! Amen.
