Snow Day

Syrian refugee children stand outside their family’s tent in early January when the first snowfall of the year came to Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.

More than 300,000 Syrian refugees live in the Bekaa. Most live in tents made of scrap plastic or in unfinished or abandoned buildings.

Nighttime temperatures dip into the mid-30s in the winter in the Bekaa and can get as low as 14 degrees. When the weather is cold and it rains or snows, refugees struggle to stay warm.
