Two thousand years ago, a tiny handful of women changed the world.
When Paul received a vision calling him to Europe, he ended up at Philippi. There he found no synagogue, no body of believers. On the Sabbath he went to the river where a group of women had gathered with a prominent businesswoman named Lydia. She invited Paul to her home so she and the others could hear the gospel. From that tiny handful of women, the church was born in Philippi.
Recently I sat with others on a riverbank in Philippi. We took Communion and remembered Jesus. We remembered that small group of women and a church that spread across Europe and into the world, including what is today America.
The prophet Zechariah asked, “Who despises the day of small things?” (4:10). What opportunity have you ignored or missed or refused to take because it seemed so small? Remember the Philippian church. Don’t despise small things.
