Simply Jesus

Description

Knowing Jesus is much more than mere knowledge. If you know Jesus, you will experience Jesus. And if you experience Jesus, your life will radically be transformed.

When people talk about their purpose, they are most often referring to what they are doing with their lives. For example, they are a doctor, a clay artist, or a small business owner. But there is an even greater purpose—a priority purpose—that has been assigned to every believer in Christ.

The apostle Paul wrote about this priority purpose when he said that he wanted to know Christ above all else. This is God’s priority purpose for me—it’s His priority purpose for you. Above all, Christ wants an intimate relationship with each one of us.

As we pursue this priority purpose, we must remember that there is a big difference between knowing Him and knowing about Him. Knowing Jesus is much more than mere knowledge. If you know Jesus, you will experience Jesus. And if you experience Jesus, your life will radically be transformed.

In his book, Simply Jesus, John Stowell writes, “More than any other writer, Paul spoke most passionately about knowing Christ. It was his singular quest in life. Everything else became peripheral—rubbish compared to knowing Jesus. And in this text, when he speaks of giving everything up to know Jesus, he uses the Greek word that means to know by experience.”

In Philippians 3:7-11, Paul wrote about the value he placed on fulfilling his priority purpose of intimately knowing Christ.

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I may have Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own goodness or my ability to obey God’s law, but I trust Christ to save me. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I can learn what it means to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

Remember, there is a big difference between knowing Him and knowing about Him. Are you fulfilling your priority purpose? In what ways are you experiencing Jesus? In what ways can you see that He is radically changing your life? My prayer is that you will know Christ in the power of His resurrection.
