Sharing Our Faith
I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ (Philemon 1:6, NIV).
On a crisp fall day when I was in high school, I walked up to a strange door and rang the bell. My palms felt sweaty and my heart seemed stuck part of the way up my throat. As part of a youth evangelism team, I was walking through the neighborhood knocking on doors, sharing about Jesus with anyone who was interested, and inviting them to visit the local Christian church.
The team leaders had given us careful training on how to be prayerful, respectful and prepared to share the basics of our faith. Still, I wondered what I’d do if someone slammed a door in my face or pounded me with theological questions I didn’t know how to answer.
A woman came to the door, eyes red-rimmed, face haggard. I politely explained I was from a local church and gave her information about our services. We chatted a bit and I asked if I could share a Bible verse with her. Inserting her name into John 3:16, I began to recite how God so loved her that He sent His Son.
Tears streamed down her face. She reached forward and hugged me. “I have to explain,” she said through her tears. “My daughter ran away last week and it’s been a terrible time. I needed to know God hadn’t forgotten about me.” I prayed with her, tingling with the awareness that God had sent me to that specific house on that specific day to share His love.
Whether with a friend or a stranger, sharing my faith is still often scary. But if I keep it to myself, I miss out on having a “full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.”
FAITH STEP: Tell someone about Jesus’ love for them today.
