Send the Fire!

Description

Christians who claim to have power but do nothing with it are like a rocket ready for lift-off but which stays on the launch pad, with a never-ending countdown!

Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you! As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you! (Isaiah 64:1-2)

Ever felt like Isaiah did? Perhaps you’ve faced some desperate situation and prayed, like him, "Oh God – You’ve got to do something!" We can almost touch the desperation in his heart. Many of us feel like that about our own nation at this time. "Oh God, our nation is in a mess – please do something! Please send your fire!" Actually, God loves prayers like that; but when we pray them, we need to be ready; for God always begins to answer such prayers in the life of the one who prayed it.

So, how does this fire of God’s power become ours? Many of us have been to conference after conference and learnt new methods and programs; yet, we still lack the power to put them into practice. What we need are not more conferences, but more power! With Isaiah, we need to cry: "Send the fire – and start with me!"

We can start, first, by telling God we are desperate and can’t do it on our own. If our attitude is, "I can do it!", we will never be in a place where the Spirit can bring His fire. Second, we need to believe that God keeps His promises in this area as much as in any other. Third, we need to put right anything God shows us is wrong in our lives, for how can we ask a holy God to work through us if we cling on to things that are unholy? Finally, we need to "give away" whatever power God gives us, for it is in giving that there is growing. It is hard to understand Christians who claim to have power but do nothing with it. They are rather like a rocket that is ready for lift-off but which stays on the launch-pad with a never-ending countdown!

Be desperate today: ask God to send his fire – and be ready for it to start in you!

When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. (2 Chronicles 7:1)
