Jesus tells us bluntly that we are to get our eyes off other people and keep our focus on Him.
One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. PSALM 27:4
When Jesus said to Peter, “Follow me!” Peter pointed to another apostle standing nearby and asked Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “What is that to you? You must follow me” (John 21:19, 21–22, italics are mine).
Jesus also says bluntly to you and me that we are to get our eyes off that other person and keep our focus on Him. Have you been deeply disturbed and discouraged, even depressed, as you have looked at the lives of those who say they are disciples yet they live like unbelievers? You wonder, where is the purity? The integrity? The humility? The commitment to unity with other believers?
My prayer is that if Jesus cannot be seen in them I want Him to be seen in me. Don’t live your life in comparison with others. Don’t look at other people and institutions and organizations or even churches! Don’t be deceived by other religions. Keep your focus on Jesus. Follow Him.
