School Break

Nikita, 11, plays carom with her friends Nikhil, 15, Anand, 11, Mahesh, 13, and Suraj, 10 in their village in India.

"When we are in school, we long for our holidays and when we have holidays, we feel like going back to school. I love my summer holidays though. We experience freedom during our vacations. I mostly play with my friends and this time I ate a lot of mangoes when I had gone to my village, says 11-year-old Nikita from India.

While some children love the break from school and homework, others get very bored because they now need to come up with interesting things to keep themselves occupied.

“We all mostly play together on the road or some open space near the road. We also watch a lot of television and cartoons. Sometimes all the boys come together and go to the big garden to play cricket, kabaddi, football and other sports,” says 11-year-old Anand.
