Scared to Death by Matthew 25
Several weeks ago, I flew to Cape Town, South Africa to visit with my friend, John Thomas. He’s the pastor of King of Kings Baptist Church and the founder of Living Hope.
One of the reasons I went was to ask John this question: “How did you do it?”
In case you didn’t know, Living Hope is a multifaceted ministry to those in the townships that have AIDS. John is recognized all over the world for his work there. I wanted to know how he did it.
In case you didn’t know, King of Kings is about 1/10 the size of Brentwood Baptist. They don’t have the resources we do. They don’t have the talent we do. And yet, they started Living Hope.
I asked him how he was able to pull it off. Do you know what he said to me? “Matthew 25 scared me to death.”
You remember Matthew 25, don’t you? It’s the passage where Jesus says, “If you’ve done it to the least of these, you’ve done it to Me.”
John was scared to death that Jesus would ask him about the thousands of people who were dying of AIDS just across the street. He was afraid he wouldn’t be able to answer Jesus.
This is what I’ve been meditating on since my return. What will I say to Jesus about the “least of these?” How will Brentwood Baptist Church answer?
I pray Matthew 25 is beginning to scare you as much as it’s beginning to scare me.
