We're never in danger of running out of Christ's love—it's an abundant and ever-present resource upon which we can rely.

We live in a world of scarce resources. We’re told we need to be careful, and we need to be mindful of how much we use.

There’s just so much energy now, so we have to use special light bulbs that don’t use much energy and don’t give much light. We only have so much oil now, so we have to measure how many miles we really need to drive. There are just so many trees, so does that email really need to be printed out? We need to save paper because we are running out of things.

Everything is scarce. We have to conserve to make sure everything counts the most that it can.

It’s not just natural resources that are scarce. Time is scarce. Remember when all of these gadgets were going to be time saving devices? We were worried about what we would do with all of our leisure.

Money is scarce. Attention is scarce. We have to be mindful that people only have so much attention to give, only so much time on their hands. So we have to make the most of this scarce resource.

From the shape of most of our relationships, we would think that love is a scarce resource. We would think there is only so much love to go around. Out of this love pie there are only so many pieces, and you have to be real careful how you measure it out—how you live it from day to day.

But is love a scarce resource—something that we are in danger of running out of? I don’t think so. John 15:13 says, No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends. Jesus came to fill us with His love to the point of overflowing, so that whoever meets us sees His love.
