Scales of Justice
A just balance and scales are the Lord's; all the weights in the bag are his work. (Proverbs 16:11 ESV)
As a woman who is in a constant battle with my bathroom scale, I must say that this verse made me giggle this morning. Is there such a thing as a just scale? I dare say no.
I recall a time when I was eight months pregnant and I had finally squirmed my way sideways into the postage-stamp-sized examination room. The gentle, tiny gynecologist asked me to step on the scale. I sized her up and down and knew I could take her, ‘Tell you what, if you can get me on that mocking piece of metal, you can weigh me. Otherwise, let’s just agree that I am not starving my baby.’
She stood for a moment sizing me up and down this time. Upon realizing that I could flatten her, she agreed to skip the weigh in. We women are not keen on just balances and scales – at least not when we’re asked to stand on them!
But when it comes to our families, oh how we seek justice when wronged. And, oh how we take offense to those who would try to harm or deceive us. I think the Lord lets us pack on some extra weight during pregnancy because he designed us to be as fierce as sumo wrestlers when it comes to defending our babies post-delivery! However, there are times when we need to take a few minutes to breathe before we speak. Like when we are exasperated with our children’s teachers, or with the teenager who refuses to slow down as they drive past our home, or with the nurse in charge of the crowded ER, we need to remember the weights in the bag are his work.
While we should plead our cases or fight for justice, we are to be a witness for Him at the same time, even to those who irritate or threaten us. We need to approach with care and love. God’s watching over the scales of justice and although they sometimes seem unjust or tipped against us, He is in control and is the final Judge.
Father, we women are challenged by scales at every turn. Life on this earth often does not seem fair by our standards. We thank You that You hold the scales of justice. Help us to hold on hard to that truth and to find peace when we are faced with threats and injustices. Amen
