Sands of Time

How astounding and life changing it is to comprehend the love and thoughts the Creator has for us!

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you. (Psalm 139:17-18 ESV)

Walking down a beach seems to draw me closer to the Lord. There’s something about the vastness of the ocean, the countless grains of sand and the roar of the waves that shouts, ‘Elohim - Creator!’

There’s no denying a designer when confronted with such beauty.

I remember, as a teen, I would drive a half-hour to the beach often – usually with my best friend, Debbie. We would walk from one end to the other and discuss the big, challenging questions about life and faith.

Although . . . I must admit, our conversation typically would include boys too. It seemed like I always had a crush (or two) and agonized with doubts and curiosity if the young man ever thought about me as much as I thought about him.

Oh the pain of unrequited young love!

I don’t remember how old I was when I read that the Creator of my beautiful beach thought about me so often that the sum of his thoughts would outnumber the sand. The verse doesn’t say how big of a beach, but what if God only thought about us for an hourglass worth? Assuming a grain size of 1mm, and that an average hourglass measures 6cm x 6cm it would hold approximately 144,000 grains of sand. That’s a lot of thoughts!

I know I still get a smile when my husband sends a sweet text to me in the middle of the day . . . just because. Our hearts swoon to know that someone we love thinks of us; even just a little bit. How much more astounding – how much more life changing – to comprehend the love and thoughts the Creator has for us? And doesn’t your heart skip a beat knowing that he inspired David to scribe those two verses for us? Truly a love text written to speak into our hearts that we are not forgotten, but cherished and thought of countless times by the eternal love of our life.

Father, wrap us up today with comforting, warm thoughts of you, knowing that you are thinking all the more of us.
