Ruled by Peace and Rooted in Joy

Kimberly Wagner uses "faith markers" to keep her on track when she is tempted to wander through the wilderness. What tactics do you use to stay on your spiritual path?

I need “faith markers” to keep my heart pressing into the path God has marked out for me. When I’m tempted to wander through a wilderness of fear, deception, despair, and self-centered thinking, faith markers direct me back on track. Let me share with you an example of how this works by using the truths from Psalm 46.

Psalm 46 is a faith marker that keeps my heart:

Ruled by Peace

Psalm 46:1-3 reminds me that even if the earth under my feet gives way, even if the mountains slip into the sea, I have no need to fear when I’m trusting in God as my refuge. Courage comes when my security is centered in God’s sovereignty. If I notice that I’ve become hesitant in my walk of faith or am making decisions based on fear, these verses provide a good heart-check.

Rooted in Joy

In this passage, God is seen dwelling in the midst of His people (that’s you and me) and refreshing them with His life-giving river (v. 4-5). As I abide in Him, He floods me with joy. Abiding in Him keeps me grounded, unshaken and immovable, as I sink my roots deeply into Him–the vine of my existence, and drink deeply of Him, the living water.

A good way to evaluate my joy level is to monitor the frequency of my complaining and griping. Joy is contagious and refreshes those around me, but a stinky attitude is easily caught as well. If I’m noticing my husband or children are lacking in joy–could it be they’ve picked up something from me?

Has this passage brought to mind anywhere you may have gone off track? Is there anything going on in your life right now that could use the directional help from this faith marker?
