Reunited and It Feels So Good

Description

Fifteen years is too long to carry around the burden of past sin. How do you think Joseph's brothers reacted after reuniting with their brother?

Scripture: Genesis 42:1-45:15

Oh, the richness in this reading! This lesson will have you wearing the dusty sandals of the brothers. It pains me to think of the years they spent in agony over what they had done. For fifteen years, they lived with the burden of this deception. Fifteen years is a long time to carry around "junk in the trunk."

Can you imagine a normal supper around the fire back then, feeling the sting of the searing pain of the past? Perhaps regret welled up as the memory of Joseph’s daily check-ups came to mind. Oh, the sleepless nights.

Fifteen years is too long to carry around the burden of past sin. It brings nothing but heartache. Harboring the sins of our past redirects our future. If only the brothers knew these truths:

My God doesn’t condemn.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (NIV)

My master is grace, not sin.
“For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.” Romans 6:14 (NIV 1984)

My Savior Jesus has set me free, therefore I am free.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 (NIV)

My old is gone; because of Jesus Christ I am new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV 1984)

These truths are the salve for the sting of our past’s pain. Let’s determine to believe and live them.
