Rest for the Soul

Focusing on God's goodness is a way to let peace wash over your racing mind.

Psalm 116:7 (NIV®)

Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.

Occasionally I’ll lie down at night and my brain will engage. I’ll start thinking about my “to do” list, projects that are upcoming, and other responsibilities. Those things are replaying in my head, and before long adrenaline kicks in. I’m tossing and turning and agitated because I know I’ll not be at my best the next day. So I have developed a habit. If that process starts, I’ll get up and begin to worship the Lord and thank Him for all the good things in my life. And if that doesn’t turn my thoughts around, I’ll open the Bible and read aloud from the Psalms. Nothing brings rest to my soul like focusing on the Lord’s goodness. Give it a try the next time you can’t sleep!

Heavenly Father, thank You for all the blessings You have poured over my life—blessings that are too many to count. Thank You for the peace and rest that You bring when I focus on You, Lord. You are truly worthy of all my praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
