Read Out Loud

These children of Bugenyuzi, Burundi, are avid readers and proud of it, thanks to World Vision’s Literacy Boost program.

To make reading a priority for the children of their community, parents and other adults set up lending libraries, afterschool programs, and reading camps. The emphasis has paid off in big results: better reading skills, more children staying in school, and better employment options in the future.

Two years before, only 39 percent of local children could read and write after completing grade 2. Now the number of readers has more than doubled.
