Quality of Peace

May we be on our guard against idols in our lives. They can creep in quietly and quickly and take up residence in our hurting hearts.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”  Matthew 5:6

We have all felt an emptiness or longing in our souls.  The need is purposeful on God’s part, and it is designed to draw us to Him.  However, it doesn’t always work out that way - does it?

We move through this life with a hunger and a thirst for truth and life -- life that can only be found in God.  We find ourselves cast to and fro by the storms of this world, and when we come across something that represents safety from the torrent,  we latch onto it.  If ever anything seems to meet us in our need, our first inclination is to worship it.

The purest example of this in my life is our battle with infertility.  I know without a shadow of a doubt that God has allowed this trial in our lives to draw us closer to Him.  He is forming us and shaping us through the heartache and pain.  And, the need created from that gaping hole in our hearts can ONLY be found in Christ our Savior.  The temptation is great to believe that if we had children, all would be filled ... the hunger gone.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

May we be on our guard against idols in our lives.  They can creep in so quietly and quickly and take up residence in our hurting hearts.  God will pursue us for so long; and at a certain point, He will give us over to our delusions.  They will never bring the satisfaction that we are searching for; only God is capable of that quality of peace.

Prayer:  “Search our hearts oh, God!  Only you know the attitude and intentions of our inmost being.  our hearts are deceitful above all things.  Expose idols that we are still holding onto.  And, may we place You back on Your rightful throne.”
