Pssssst . . . Shhhhh!
And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. (1 Kings 19:11-12 ESV)
I don’t know about you but I think after all Elijah had gone through, a whisper was probably exactly what he needed about that time. After all, whispers can sometimes be stronger than anything. When people speak low, it’s often because what they are about to say is important!
What I love about this story is that Elijah didn’t go looking for God outside in the storm when rocks were falling, the earth was shaking, and the heat of the fires still burning. No, he steered clear of the danger and hunkered down and waited on the Lord.
Then, because he knew the sound of God’s voice, when He whispered sweet and low, Elijah knew it was safe to move.
Ladies, we need to take this example to heart. So often when things are swirling around in our life, when there’s heat under our feet, we want to jump in and take things under our control. But we need to stop, pray, read His Word and wait until we are so tuned in that we can hear Him whisper peace into our heart, giving us confirmation and directions. Then we will know that it’s safe to go and do.
Father, we thank You that You are a gracious, merciful God who speaks through the storms of our lives in love. Forgive us for jumping into our days without stopping and waiting for Your directions. Help us to love and desire Your Word, that we would grow to know Your voice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
