Proud Grandma

Rahima is more than a midwife, she advocates making her community safe for everyone.

Rahima was especially proud that she was able to attend her grandson’s birth. Her knowledge of best practices for moms and babies helped launch him toward a healthy, productive life.

"I am happy to have qualified [as a birth attendant]. Now I want the same thing to happen with my grandson. I desire him to be a doctor," Rahima Begum says.

Rahima, 45, is a trained midwife in Durgapur Union, Bangladesh. She recently attended World Vision’s five-day course on emergency obstetrics, safe motherhood, and infant care. She also participated in a three-day refresher training World Vision offered for traditional birth attendants.

Yet Rahima’s service to the community goes beyond serving as a midwife. She also advocates to make Durgpur Union safe for all community members, promoting safe drinking water, prevention of water-borne diseases, healthy nutrition, and optimal hygiene practices.
