Promises in Proverbs

Description

The Proverbs contains two important promises that are very helpful in our efforts to handle our money in a way that pleases the Lord.

“Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands.”
(Psalm 112:1 NIV)

When it comes to financial principles, one of the richest books in the Bible is Proverbs. This book contains two important promises that are very helpful in our efforts to handle our money in a way that pleases the Lord.

Promise 1—Wisdom and discipline can be acquired.

We all make mistakes, but the wisdom found in Proverbs can help us change and become wise and disciplined in our behavior. This is critical; because when we’re undisciplined we stumble through life, pay penalties for our behavior, and end up in serious trouble.

Symptoms of a lack of discipline include believing advertising. You think you need what you see, hear, and read about. But you don’t realize that advertising is designed to create needs in your mind.

You struggle to live within your means and become trapped in a cycle of debt. You fail to accomplish your life purpose and achieve your potential. You want to accomplish things the easy way.

Promise 2—The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

Proverbs links the fear of God with ending foolishness. A life of wisdom and discipline begins with fearing God (i.e., giving God the respect and position in our lives He deserves). Most people believe it begins with bettering themselves, but we must see ourselves as smaller than God in order to acquire what He has for us. We must acknowledge that we need Him and that He has a better way and plan.

True wisdom starts with having an awe of God. You can’t have wisdom without humility. Where you turn for wisdom shows where your heart is, and if you’re not turning to God, you’re headed for trouble.

If you’ve become self-reliant, confess that attitude and repent before God. He will teach you His ways, and through following them you will be blessed by knowing Him better.
