My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.(Psalm 73:26 ESV)
When my girls were in their early teens, we took our first cruise together. They were thrilled to see a complimentary room service card on their bed for their first breakfast and – being true carnivores – wanted bacon, bacon with a side of . . . bacon. Figuring that 2 strips of bacon were typically a portion at most restaurants, we negotiated 6 servings each would be more than they would need or could possibly eat. I only ordered a fruit plate for myself deciding that I could eat a few strips of their leftovers. What a treat to get such service for free!
The next morning when the server stopped at our door, he sported a mischievous and knowing grin. I stood with the door ajar, eying his cart while shaking my head, “You must have the wrong room – we only ordered some bacon and fruit.”
Ignoring my protests, he pushed the cart into our room, piling the domed dishes on the tiny counter. I hastily handed him a tip as he left. He still hadn’t uttered a word but his smile spoke volumes.
My two groggy girls hung their heads from their top bunks, “Is that the bacon?”
I pulled off the first silver cover to see a crisscross plate full of pork strips. There had to be dozens! So what were the other platters? The next mystery dish was full of healthy looking fruit. The third plate was a few sweet breads and Danish, (which I found out was always included) and then finally the last plate. Pulling off the cover, I was dismayed to see yet more bacon. We had enough bacon in our tiny stateroom to tilt the boat!
The girls squealed with delight!
Passing the two plates to the glowing teens, I grabbed the phone and called room service. Lo and behold, a serving was six strips, not two! Talk about crazy portions – they had 72 strips! I knew cruises were known for generous rations, but this was just too much! (Embarrassed to say, no pigs gave their lives needlessly . . . they ate every bite!)
The Word says that He is our portion. Some of us are like the girls and feast on Him as if we were at a free, five star buffet, but others of us are scrimping and taking shy-sized servings. We need to run to Him and allow Him to fill us to the measure!
Father, forgive us for being stingy when it comes to how we dole out our time with You. Help us to devour your Word, and to spend time with you savoring all that You have done for us. Thank you Jesus. Amen!
