Persistent Passion

Description

Lori Dixon tells a story about her dog's persistence to be with her. Are you persistent and passionate about a close relationship with God?

And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’ . . . I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. (Luke 11:5-6 & 8 ESV)

Our dog, Mona, is a nag.

When she was young, I tried to take her to obedience class but alas, she refused to participate. I should have known then that she was going to make life interesting.

‘Commands’ are mere ‘suggestions’ to the bossy mutt.

So, upon returning home from a trip, we were dismayed to find that she had been allowed by our daughter to sleep up on the bed at night. It had taken us awhile to break the habit a few years back and now she had assumed the bed position again. Sigh.

Seconds after we tuck her into her own oh-so-cozy bed, we hear her make her way towards ours. We feel a tiny hit as she places her front paws on the mattress, straining to see us. Back down she goes, unable to bring her long dachshund body up unto the tall bed on her own. Oh the pain of separation!

She cries. And whines. And sighs. And cries . . .

And so . . . we give in. Because she is getting old, and we are old. We just can’t stand to hear her begging and in such distress.

Nor can God:

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 10:13 ESV)

The passage in Luke tells of a Loving Master who is willing to give us what we want if we are persistent and passionate. But read the verses carefully . . . because just like Mona, the thing we are to be whining and begging for is to be closer to Him.

Father, thank You that You want us to draw near to You and be filled! Help us not to be satisfied with distance or ‘enough’ but to desire You with such tenacity and passion we are driven to our knees. Please hear our cries and give us more of Your sweet, powerful Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
