Pass It On

Description

Rosemary, left, and her best friend Tassy walk with World Vision Zambia staff member Agatha Mali at a public grazing ground near their homes in Zambia.

The livestock are descended from those given to families through World Vision’s Gift Catalog. They have transformed poverty to prosperity for many families.

Rosemary’s family used to borrow money just to be able to feed the children. "Those things enslaved us,” says Danford, Rosemary’s grandfather.

Danford received 5 goats through the Gift Catalog in 2011. Goats enabled the family to diversify their crops and also try new income generation activities. They’ve bought other animals like chickens, ducks and even 4 cows.

When a family received Gift Catalog animals from World Vision, they agree that at some future date — usually in about a year’s time — they will donate the same number of animals to another family in need.

“It’s a time of sharing the joy with others,” says Rosemary’s grandmother, Patricia. “They deserve the smile I also enjoyed when I first received.”

That new family agrees to the same conditions, and they donate when they are able.

It’s like candles at a Christmas Eve service where one candle glimmers in the darkness, then passes the flame to the next candle and then the next.

Soon the sanctuary beams brightly. Now replace those lights with a pasture filled with animals grazing, and you see the power of the Pass On Program.
