Overwhelmed with Sorrow
Then He said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me." Matthew 26:38 NIV
If Jesus got “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” how much more will you and I?
I have shared this with readers in the past, but it bears mentioning again. The old saying “God will not put more on you than you can bear” is only half true. It cannot be backed up fully in Scripture. I believe the saying comes from 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says God “will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” It goes on to say that when you are, He will provide a way out.
This is not talking about trials, it is talking about temptation. I read elsewhere in Scriptures that Elijah faced a journey “too much for him” (1 Kings 19). I read that Paul faced trials “far beyond our ability to endure” (2 Corinthians 1:8) and that Paul once “gave up all hope” (Acts 27:20). Sometimes, my friend, God will allow you to have more on you than you can bear...at least on your own. It is those times that you will need some help...and guess what? He wants to help you!
Isn’t that what the Christian life is all about, God working through us to do what we cannot do on our own? We couldn’t save ourselves, so He sent Jesus to the Cross. We can’t bear our burdens alone, so He asks us to “cast our cares” upon Him. It gives God glory when we can’t do it and God can!
Jesus in His full humanity faced something bigger than Him! He needed some help. The gospel of Luke tells us that the angels came to strengthen Him at Gethsemane. If Jesus needed this kind of help, how much more will you and I?
My Christian brothers and sisters, are you trying to do it alone? In His full humanity, Jesus didn’t. Why should we? Call upon the God who gave Jesus the strength to endure the Cross. That same power is available to all who will “call upon His name," through Jesus.
