THE ANGEL ANSWERED, “THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL COME ON YOU, AND THE POWER OF THE MOST HIGH WILL OVERSHADOW YOU. SO THE HOLY ONE TO BE BORN WILL BE CALLED THE SON OF GOD. — LUKE 1:35
Mary must have felt overwhelmed in that moment she learned she, of all people, had been chosen to be the mother of God's Son. She was just a simple Jewish girl. There was nothing impressive about her, as far as the world could see.
But God didn't want impressive. He's impressive enough. He didn't need credentials, either. After all, who would top His credentials? What God wanted, what He searched the whole world for, was a simple, humble heart. He wanted a woman who knew she wasn't up to the task, but who recognized that He was up to any task.
He found that humility in Mary. Through that humility, through that recognition that she wasn't enough, God poured out His power. The Holy Spirit came upon her. The power of the Most High overshadowed her. And God's glory shone through the plain, quiet frame of her meekness.
God wants to work that way in each of our lives. The Holy Spirit waits to come upon a humble heart that recognizes she can't do it on her own. God longs to display His power through the lives of people who don't claim power of their own. When we recognize our weakness, we allow room for God's strength to shine.
Dear Father, I can't manage this life without You. I'm not up to the task. Holy Spirit, come upon me. Overshadow me with Your power. Amen.
