Our Mighty Bridge
Matthew 5:17 (NIV®)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
Have you noticed that there are a lot of rules and regulations in the first books of the Old Testament? It took considerable effort to be God’s people back in the day. “Wear this. Don’t eat that. Go outside the camp for this. Find a priest for that.” Whew! But there was a purpose for all of those rules: without the Mosaic Law and the sacrificial system, without God’s detailed explanation of His holiness and what we have to do to bridge the gap between Him and us, we wouldn’t have understood the necessity or significance of Jesus’ death. The Law makes us aware that even the holiest of us could not keep it perfectly. And when we put Jesus in the context of the story, we recognize that His death did something for us that we could not do for ourselves: bridge the gap between us and God.
Heavenly Father, I am so grateful that You are a merciful God who has not left us to strive toward holiness on our own. I praise You that through Your intervention we’ve been made righteous, justified in your sight. Thank You for the saving work of Jesus that makes me not only accepted in Your family, but loved as Your dearest child. I come to You in the powerful name of Jesus, amen.
