Open to Opportunity

Description

Each day affords numerous opportunities to love who Jesus loves in the way Jesus loves.

Read: Colossians 4:5

Stewardship has become a “churchy” word. I’ve never heard it used outside a religious context, even though its definition isn’t specific to the church. Stewardship simply means to manage another’s property or affairs, to be held responsible, to be entrusted.

When we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God, the responsibility to be a good steward just makes sense. My marriage is a gift from God; I am to be a responsible steward of that gift. Good health has been given to me, am I being a good steward of that trust? My children are entrusted to me by their Heavenly Father; my parenting is an act of stewardship. My time is given by God; I am to manage it well. My material possessions belong to God, and I will be held accountable for my stewardship of those blessings. That’s a pretty common list of stewardship responsibilities. What we don’t often think about is being good stewards of the opportunities God gives us to make Him famous.

Our agnostic neighbor didn’t choose the house beside ours by accident. The high school friend I keep bumping into around town doesn’t travel my same path without divine purpose. The homeless man standing by Chick-Fil-A as I drive into the mall parking lot is an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Each day affords numerous opportunities to love who Jesus loves in the way Jesus loves. I will be open and intentional. I will be bold and compassionate.
