On Guard and Alert
Luke 11:24-26 (NIV®)
“When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first.”
Have you ever considered that evil spirits move in and out of people? Jesus isn’t speaking metaphorically or telling a parable—He’s describing our thoughts and emotions and physical bodies being negatively impacted by spiritual forces. Do you know how to defend yourself spiritually? The Bible’s counsel is to not seek direction or insight from any spiritual influence other than the Spirit of God. We are warned against the occult. My personal choice is to avoid all kinds of fortune telling, including reading horoscopes. If God thinks I need to know, He’ll tell me. I don’t watch movies or read books that glorify dark spiritual forces. I know I forfeit some “cool” points, but the spiritual risk is too high. Just as we are physical beings, we are spiritual beings; and we must learn how to guard and protect our spiritual life and well-being.
Heavenly Father, thank you. Thank you for Your Word. Thank you for the Spirit of the Living God that lives within me. Open my eyes to see the places in my life where darkness may reside. I repent for any place where I have sought direction or insight from any spiritual influences other than You. I want to cooperate with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
