Nudge of Faith
…According to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. Ephesians 3:11–12, NKJV
I'm not much of a thrill-seeker, but I know that new experiences are valuable. So at a family reunion in Colorado one summer, I decided to push my limits and climb a thirty-foot pole to a zip-line descent.
The climb was easier than I expected. Pure panic helped me find the necessary handholds and clamber up. When I reached the platform, I hugged the pole, hyperventilating. I told myself that I was breathing hard from the climb and the lack of oxygen at high altitudes. But the swaying of the pole and the sight of treetops beneath me were the real causes. The poor camp counselor had a tough time hooking in the new carabiner for the zip line and unhooking me from the climbing belay because I kept my nose pressed against the pole.
“Nice climb. Okay, now turn around and step off,” he said cheerfully.
Um, I don’t think so. I managed to turn on the tiny platform. “Can I hold the rope here?” Discussing the finer points of harnesses and ropes seemed like a good plan. Anything to stall.
“Hold them together. That’s right. Now, when you’re ready,” he said.
How about the twelfth of never?
But that morning, when I’d thought about the wonderful soaring ride into space, I’d said, “Lord, let my jump be a prayer. Let it yell to the heavens that I trust You—that I’ll climb when it’s scary, and step out of comfortable places and fly with You.”
So I counted to three and stepped into space. The harness caught my weight, and I flew through the glorious Colorado sunshine.
No wonder camps have found these sorts of challenge activities so worthwhile. It’s a chance to enact a little parable—one that I’ll carry in my muscle memory. Life is full of leg-quivering risks. But God provides boldness and faith through Jesus Christ, and enables us to do things we would have bet we could never do.
