Not My Own

Description

We serve at the Lord’s pleasure, and if need be we're literally to offer our bodies to God.

Acts 12:1 (NIV®)

It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church.

Acts 12 is an amazing story of the unfolding purposes of God. The city of Jerusalem is being shaken. Thousands of people are responding to the God-story, and the apostles are being repeatedly threatened and arrested. In this one chapter, James is executed and Peter is released supernaturally from prison. God didn’t love one more than the other, but we serve at the Lord’s pleasure. We often imagine our lives are our own. We assume that being a Christ-follower is about God meeting our needs and making us happy. The Bible says we are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, to literally offer our bodies to God. In our humanity we struggle to believe it, but honoring the Lord with our lives will bring us greater benefits in time and eternity than anything else we can do for ourselves.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, You have given life to me and placed the very breath in my lungs. My life is not my own, Lord, it is Yours to do with as You please. Show me how I may serve You and not myself today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
