Noisy for Jesus
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. Matthew 28:19–20, NRSV
Christ gave His disciples the Great Commission when He told His disciples to go out and “make disciples of all nations.”
What does that have to do with me? I’m not one of the twelve disciples. I’m not particularly wise or fluent or bold. Shyness often overtakes me when I speak about spiritual things or about my faith. Surely there’s nothing in these verses that applies to me! Yet if I know someone hasn’t heard the good news of salvation and I say nothing, have I disobeyed God? It terrifies me to think that because of my timidity or introversion, someone might not hear about Christ and His saving grace. I want to be noisy for Jesus. I want no one to miss His salvation because of my apprehension or lack of confidence.
There are endless opportunities to tell people about Christ’s sacrifice, and so many people who don’t know Him. If I really accept as true that all unbelievers will spend eternity apart from God, why am I waiting? What holds me up? Laziness? Fear of criticism? Being pulled out of my comfort zone? Is it because I don’t want to give up those things that are important to my security and ease? Am I too busy hanging on to earthly things to do what God has asked of me? It’s time to become uncomfortable with my inaction. He created me for a purpose—I must be available to God so He can use me as I’m meant to be.
If my mouth grows stiff and shy when I begin to talk about God, then I will begin by speaking with my life—my actions, my choices, my behavior—and ask that the Holy Spirit loosen my tongue and give me the words to converse for Him.
I don’t want anyone to see anything in who I am or how I act that would hint that I’m not one of Christ’s. I must speak not only with my life but also with my lips, and pray that what goes out from me—in any form—speaks blessings to someone else.
FAITH STEP: Will you speak God’s love and salvation today? How? To whom? Do it.
