No Longer Owned

Description

The good news of the gospel is that the dominion of sin has been broken over our lives. We still face it and its invitations, but it does not own us.

Romans 6:1-4 (NIV®)

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Before we came to the cross of Jesus and chose Him as Lord, sin was our master. It owned us. We might have learned to paint it up or hold it down or push it away; but ultimately, it owned us. The good news of the gospel is that the dominion of sin has been broken over our lives. We still face it and its invitations, but it does not own us. Are we sinless? Absolutely not. But as we mature and grow in the Lord, we should sin less and less and less. My motivation for living a godly life isn’t so I can earn my way to heaven, because that’s impossible. My motivation is an expression of gratitude for what Jesus did for me on the cross. I lead my life in obedience and yielding to Jesus out of appreciation and respect and honor for what He’s done for me. Jesus didn’t die on a cross for you and me to lead mediocre lives. He died on a cross so we could lead victorious lives.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I come before You in thanksgiving and gratitude for the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for me. I want to live in a way that shows honor and respect for that. Help me to make daily choices that show that sin is not my master, for I want to live a life that is victorious in You. In the name of Jesus, our victorious Savior, amen.
