Nana’s Cookies

Description

Laura Petherbridge remembers the desire to be special being fulfilled by her Nana and she believes everyone can have the need for unconditional love fulfilled by God.

The supermarket offered a plethora of choices, but my eye caught the brown package on the top shelf. The sight instantly triggered a warm memory into my Nana’s kitchen.

Nana rarely purchased “store bought” anything, much less pastries. In her kitchen pre-prepared food was a sacrilege. Meals needed to be home made. And superb I might add. But for some reason she allowed one brand of peanut butter and chocolate cookies from the store into her cupboard. I loved them.

After my parent’s divorce my Dad would pick up my brother and me for weekend visitation. He brought us to Nana’s house where the beloved cookies were always waiting. It wasn’t until years later, when I saw a similar package in the store, that I realized how those cookies made me feel cherished.

Although the cookies were great, the sweet remembrance was more about Nana and her desire to make sure they were there for me. She remembered. I was significant. I was loved.

I find it interesting that all these years later, one glance at a package of cookies could stir those hidden thoughts and emotions.

And it brings home one glaring truth. We long to be treasured and precious. And when the world beats us up with lies such as, “You’re worthless, ugly, fat, stupid, unlovable, and a waste of time,” it wounds our soul. It devastates us to our core.

God knows our hearts have been broken, and He has the precise cure. He woos us with adoration and affection, “You are precious and honored in my sight, and I love you.”

The Perfect Papa reveals that we are deeply loved with a vow of forever faithfulness, “I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!”

God wants me to know that the kind of love Nana showed me as a child is mere glimpse, a foretaste, of the lavish love He desires to pour into my heart. And no matter how old we get the desire to be special still resides within us.

Friends, family members, or a spouse may be able to offer love. However, the search for significance rests only in Christ’s ability to offer a soul deep, unique confidence that I am adored.

I don’t know why, but the Creator of the Universe says I’m irresistible, He is crazy in love with me and I make him smile!! He sings love songs about me, which calm my anxious, trembling heart.

And as much as I loved those cookies, and my Nana, nothing—absolutely nothing—can compare to the assurance I have in Christ. His encompassing cloak of unconditional love is what finally completes me.

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17
